NDI Bangladesh has
organised and held two major international video conferences. In
December 2004, NDI brought together Parliamentarians and experts
from five countries to discuss “Parliament and the Media.”
The countries taking part live were Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka,
the United Kingdom and the United States and the World Bank office
in Washington, D.C. This was the first time that such an event was
held in Bangladesh. Barrister Moudud Ahmed MP was the Chief Guest.
The panelists at the Commonwealth Parliamentary
Association in London included Rt Hon. Lord Fowler, a Conservative
Member of the House of Lords and a former Cabinet Minister and Ms
Oona King MP, Labour Member of the House of Commons since 1997.
The special guest of the evening was H. E. Mr. Anwar Chowdhury,
British High Commissioner.
In April 2005, NDI Bangladesh organised and held another video-conference
to discuss the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper and the role of
Parliamentarians. The panel in Dhaka comprised of Mr. Amir Khosru
Mahmud Chowdhury MP, former Commerce Minister, and senior representatives
from The World Bank, DFID and UNDP, along with leading Parliamentarians
and former Ambassadors. The Speaker from the United Kingdom was
Mr. Tony Worthington, Labour Member of Parliament for Clydebank
and Milngavie. He joined the session from London.
