  NDI Roundtable Conference on Electoral Assistance for the Disabled  
 

NDI will host a roundtable on Tuesday 12th June 2007 at the Spectra Convention Centre, Gulshan 1, on “Electoral Assistance for the Disabled”.

Keynote speakers at the roundtable will be Dr Atiur Rahman, Economist and advocate of disabled persons rights and Mr. Nurul Kabir, Editor, the New Age.

Representatives of the Bangladesh Election Commission, Political Parties, Civil Society and the Donor Community in Bangladesh have been invited to attend.

The roundtable, which is being held in collaboration with the National Alliance of Disabled Persons Organizations (NADPO) will raise awareness on the difficulties experienced by disabled persons both in the registration and election process. There are approximately 7.5 million disabled voters in Bangladesh and areas for discussion will include; assistance to disabled persons in registering to vote; identification of disabled persons on the voters list; accessibility to Polling Centers for disabled persons; awareness raising with political parties, candidates and election observers on the rights of disabled voters; assistance to disabled persons in casting their vote in elections. The roundtable will also seek the assistance of the media in awareness raising campaigns.

Recommendations from the roundtable will be presented to the Bangladesh Election Commission.

This roundtable will take place with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

  Pre-Election Assessment Mission  
 
In anticipation of the upcoming January 2007 parliamentary polls, NDI organized an international delegation to Bangladesh from September 8-11 to assess the current political environment and make recommendations on measures that can improve the electoral process. The delegation met with the Election Commission; leaders of political parties; representatives of domestic monitoring groups and other civic organizations; journalists and academics; members of the diplomatic community; and others involved in electoral activities. The delegation was led by: Tom Daschle, former Majority and Minority Leader of the United States Senate; Mike Moore, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and former Director-General of the World Trade Organization; Mu Sochua, former Minister of Women’s and Veteran’s Affairs of Cambodia.   Pre-Election Assessment Mission  
 
From September 8-11th, NDI Bangladesh will host a pre-election assessment mission. The Assessment is being led by former US Senator Tom Daschle, former Majority & Minority Leader, US Senate and will include Mike Moore, former PM of New Zealand and former Secretary General of the WTO, and Mu Sochua, former Minister of Women’s & Veteran’s Affairs and Member of Parliament in Cambodia.   Supporting Women Political Leaders in Muslim South Asia  
 
The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs is currently implementing a program entitled “Supporting Women Political Leaders in Muslim South Asia” which seeks to enhance the political and leadership skills of female political activists in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan and to advance the participation of women in the political sphere in these three countries. The final regional workshop of this program will take place in Dhaka from 4th to 7th December.

  Organization and management of study circle program  
 
In September 12, 2005 a day long training session about "organization and management of study circle program" was held in NDI conference room. Sixteen participants from eight partner NGOs were participated in the training session.

  Orientation program about study circle  
 
In September 13, 2005, a day long orientation program about study circle was held in NDI office. Eight participants from two interested NGOs from Jessore, took part in the orientation.

  Facilitator Training  
 
A three days 'Facilitator Training' is going to held in Rajoir, Madaripur, between 27-29, September 2005. Thirty participants from eight different NGOs are going to participate in the training session.
